Why Choose MediTrain for Your First Aid Training

Nationwide First Aid Training

Choosing the right first aid training provider is about more than meeting workplace requirements. It’s about knowing you can act confidently when it matters most.

For over 30 years, MediTrain has been helping New Zealanders learn practical, memorable, and effective first aid skills. Every year, tens of thousands of learners choose MediTrain because the training is flexible, affordable, and designed to make learning stick.

What makes a MediTrain first aid class different

Many large providers offer long, lecture-style courses that feel more like reading a manual than real training. MediTrain takes a different approach.

  • Blended learning lets you complete theory online at your own pace, then attend a one-day in-person session.
  • Experienced instructors Many of our trainers are paramedics or healthcare professionals with real-world experience. They don't just teach from a manual; they bring scenarios to life with practical insights.
  • Practical Focus: Our in-person sessions are designed for maximum hands-on practice. We focus on active learning, ensuring you leave feeling confident in your abilities.
  • Visual Learning Resources: We believe learning should be accessible. That's why we provide a unique, visually structured first aid manual. Written in plain language with clear, step-by-step guides and ample illustrations, it's designed to make complex information easy to understand and remember.
  • Designed for All Learners: Our materials, including videos and online quizzes, cater to diverse learning styles. We simplify complex concepts without compromising on essential information.
  • Visual manuals and interactive learning make complex concepts easy to understand and remember.
  • NZQA, WorkSafe NZ, and Ministry of Education approved courses give your certificate national recognition.
  • 12 regional branches across New Zealand ensure local access and support.
  • Excellent value, with public course prices often lower than larger national providers.

At MediTrain, training is designed around one goal: to make learning practical, enjoyable, and lasting.

 How MediTrain’s blended learning works

MediTrain’s blended format combines online theory with a hands-on practical class.

The online learning is flexible and easy to use. Once you book, you’ll receive login access to a secure portal where you can complete interactive lessons, and quizzes at your own pace. The content is written in plain English, free from jargon, and follows the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation Guidelines.

When you attend the in-person course, instructors revisit the key theory and guide you through CPR, choking response, bleeding control, and other real-life scenarios. This approach ensures that by the time you reach class, you already understand the essentials and can focus on applying them.

What to expect in a MediTrain first aid class

MediTrain classes are interactive, relaxed, and engaging. Trainers use humour, demonstrations, and roleplay to help you remember what to do. Every class is a mix of discussion, practice, and small-group exercises, rather than long lectures.

One of MediTrain’s instructors, Nerilee, describes her approach simply:

“I don’t talk at people, I talk with them. Everyone learns differently, so we mix discussion, videos, and doing. The more people do, the more it sticks.”

Courses are inclusive and adaptable. Instructors use translation tools and visual examples for learners whose first language isn’t English. The goal is to make sure every participant leaves with real confidence, not just a certificate.

How MediTrain first aid courses are recognised

All MediTrain workplace courses meet national standards.

  • NZQA-approved and aligned with unit standards 6400, 6401, and 6402
  • WorkSafe NZ compliant for workplace first aid
  • Ministry of Education recognised for early childhood and school requirements

Certificates remain valid for two years, and refresher courses ensure your skills stay current.

MediTrain’s learning tools and resources

MediTrain’s First Aid Manual – Edition 5 follows the course structure and includes updated content on topics like COVID-19 and drug & alcohol overdoses. The manual is clear, visual, and easy to reference long after your course.

Training materials also include video demonstrations, props, and hands-on scenarios that replicate real emergencies. Every part of the program is built to make information stick.

First aid course pricing and comparison

Course types have different names depending on who you use, but their content and assessment are consistent for all NZQA-approved companies awarding unit standards. Essentially, workplace first aid courses are either 1-unit standard (CPR), 2-unit standards (Basic Workplace), 3-unit standards (Comprehensive Workplace) or refresher courses.
